This supplement has been developed based on the "New Clinical Strategies for the Recognition and Treatment of Bipolar Disorder: Can We Successfully Advance Care?" program that took place on September 14-15, 2007, in San Antonio, Texas. The intent is to provide best practices to clinicians relative to the diagnosis and treatment of bipolar disorder across the life span.

TARGET AUDIENCE
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of psychiatrists, primary care physicians, and clinical psychiatry nurses.
EDUCATIONAL NEEDS
There continues to be a critical need for better recognition and diagnosis of bipolar disorder by clinicians in both psychiatry and primary care. There is also a mandate for new clinical strategies informed by the latest research in treating individuals with bipolar disorder.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
• Refine their diagnostic skills with an expanded understanding of the differential diagnosis of the bipolar spectrum and unipolar depression
• Review the latest clinical evidence and treatment strategies in bipolar disorder
• Delineate the clinical approaches for short-term vs long-term management of bipolar disorder
• Consider the complexities of bipolar disorder in adults and children, with a better understanding of the variety of associated comorbidities and clinical presentations
• Recognize and diagnose bipolar disorder as early as possible
• Apply appropriate treatment strategies in an effort to prevent recurrence and limit or eliminate all symptoms.
