Progress in the treatment of schizophrenia over the last decades has been dramatic, with the development of new antipsychotics and accelerating research into the disorder's diverse symptom domains. But a substantial proportion of patients—20%–30% is a common estimate—still remain moderately to severely symptomatic despite successive medication trials (Psychiatr. Clin. North Am. 2007;30:511-33).
